Project Overview

The Suubi+Adherence Study was a 5-year research project that started in 2013 and was implemented in 7 districts in the Greater Masaka region, known to be the epicenter of HIV and AIDS in Uganda. ICHAD and Reach the Youth Uganda (RTY) worked in collaboration with 39 health facilities and 702 study participants living with HIV, who were aware of their status and on ART treatment.

The study is an efficacious economic empowerment intervention previously tested in Rakai and Masaka among children affected by AIDS.

Project Aims

  • Provide support for adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART)
  • Promote income-generating activities for poor HIV+ adolescents and their families
  • Enable families to afford costs in managing HIV as a chronic illness

Key Focus: Ensuring sufficient nutritional resources, funds for medical care, transportation, and medication.

Intervention Components

Income Generating Activities (IGAs)

Training study participants in Income Generating Activities (IGAs) to build sustainable livelihoods.

Savings & Matching

Supporting participants to open bank accounts, encouraging monthly savings with 1:1 matching by ICHAD for two years.

Banking Partnership

The banking and matching components were managed in partnerships with Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) and Centenary Bank. ICHAD/RTY provided initial capital for study participants to open bank accounts. The matching ratio was 1:1.

Economic Empowerment

Start or expand family-based IGAs owned by the study participant

Education
